Masonry Damage Assessment

Ten questions about what you can see from the ground. Look from a safe distance; never climb, push on or probe loose masonry.

1. What part of the building is it?
2. Is any brick or stone loose or missing, or has material fallen?
3. From a safe distance, does the wall or chimney look like it leans or bulges?
4. What cracks can you see?
5. What does the mortar between the bricks look like?
6. Are the faces of any bricks or stones flaking or popping off?
7. Is water getting inside near this masonry?
8. Is there white powder or crust on the masonry?
9. Are there rust stains or cracks starting at the corners of windows or doors?
10. Roughly when was the building built?

0 of 10 answered. Skip any you are not sure about.

What this assessment can and cannot tell you

The questions follow the order a mason works through on a first look: what part of the building it is, whether anything is loose or moving, what the cracks and mortar look like, and where water is getting in. The answers sort the situation into four levels, from keeping people clear to nothing urgent. It cannot see inside the wall, so it never says a wall is safe or names a hidden cause. A crack pattern alone does not prove why a wall cracked; the stair-step crack guide and the guide on when a crack needs an engineer explain why. True Course Masonry Newark can look at the wall in person; start with the form below or see masonry repair.
